It’s Officially Dab Season! When Winter Calls for a Change in Smoking Habits.

Every year, the story is the same. Summer bids its farewell, fall flashes by in a blink, and suddenly, winter blankets Michigan. For those unfamiliar, Michigan winters are as stunning as they are challenging, especially for someone like me who cherishes a joint on the porch after a taxing day. The crisp air, the symphony of nature, a touch of music, and excellent weed – there’s nothing that quite matches up.

But then, the formidable Midwest winters roll in, often trapping us indoors for months. I’ve never been keen on smoking cannabis inside. The dream? A ventilated room akin to a cigar lounge. And with my nephew around, courtesy of helping my brother, indoor smoking isn’t a choice. So, how do I manage those quick hits I need to start my day or wind down at night?

Enter the season of dabs.

I’m relatively new to dabbing – it’s been about three years. The journey began with winning a Puffco Peak in a 420 raffle, and it was love at first dab. I quickly realized that dabbing is an entirely different realm, almost like learning a new language. Even seasoned cannabis enthusiasts can get lost in the nuances of crumble versus shatter – I know I did at first.

To ease your transition during those too-darn-cold-to-smoke-outside days, here’s a straightforward guide to the world of concentrates:

  • Live Resin: Extracted from fresh plants, live resin boasts a versatile texture and robust flavor. It ranks among the pricier concentrates, thanks to a complex process that preserves a rich terpene profile.
  • Rosin: This solvent-free extract is noted for its light color and varied textures. Its higher cost comes from a mechanical extraction process involving heat and pressure.
  • Sauce: Often crafted from fresh plants, sauce dazzles with its diamond-like crystalline appearance. It’s priced higher, particularly when it features a blend of THC crystals in terpene-rich oil.
  • Shatter: Clear and glass-like, shatter is a straightforward hydrocarbon extract. While less pricey than its counterparts above, it remains a potent and favored choice.
  • Sugar Wax: Resembling wet sugar, this affordable extract results from a simpler hydrocarbon process, making it a budget-friendly option.

Dabbing also demands specific tools for a top-notch experience:

  • Dab Rig: The core of dabbing, this specialized water pipe is designed for high temperatures and efficient vapor cooling.
  • Nail or Banger: Made from materials like quartz, ceramic, or titanium, this part heats up for concentrate placement.
  • Dab Torch: Essential for heating the nail or banger, butane torches offer precision and high heat.
  • Dab Tool or Wand: A metal instrument for safely applying concentrates to the heated surface.
  • Carb Cap: This tool manages airflow and pressure, ensuring efficient vaporization.
  • Timer: Vital for accurate temperature control to optimize vaporization.
  • Cleaning Supplies: Keeping your rig and tools clean is crucial for flavor and hygiene.
  • Mat: A heat-resistant surface for safely placing hot tools.

When used correctly, these tools elevate the dabbing experience, making it a smooth, flavorful, and potent method to enjoy cannabis concentrates.

Embracing the Cold with Warm Dabs

As winter’s grip tightens, I find solace in the warm embrace of dabbing. It’s a journey of discovery, flavor, and convenience that perfectly suits the indoor confines during these chilly months. Whether you’re a dabbing novice or a curious onlooker, there’s never been a better time to explore this fascinating aspect of cannabis culture. Happy dabbing!
